MEASUREMENT OF THE PARITY VIOLATING ASYMMETRY IN ELASTIC ELECTRON SCATTERING OFF Pb SEPTEMBER 2014 JONATHAN WILLIAM WEXLER, JR., B.A., HAMILTON COLLEGE M.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by Krishna Kumar The Lead Radius Experiment (PREX) was carried out in order to provide a modelindependent measurement of the RMS radius √ 〈r2 n〉 of the neutron distribution in the Pb nucleus. The parity-violating scattering asymmetry for longitudinally polarized 1.06 GeV electrons from an unpolarized Pb target was measured at Q = 0.00880 GeV. This measurement was performed by the PREX collaboration in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News, VA, between March and June, 2010. The electron detectors used in this measurement were designed and fabricated by University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Smith College. The resulting parity-violating asymmetry was measured as APV = 656± 60(stat.)± 14(sys.) ppb. This asymmetry extrapolates to a difference in radii between the nuclear neutron and proton distributions of √ 〈r2 n〉 √〈 r2 p 〉 = 0.33 −0.18 fm.

Request for Beam Time to Complete PREX

This document addresses the beam time required to achieve the design sensitivity of the PREX experiment. As we elaborate below, a 1% measurement of the neutron radius using an electroweak probe will remain compelling for years to come. We estimate that the recently completed physics run of the PREX experiment will yield a ∼2.5% measurement of the neutron radius. While this is a major accomplish...

Parity Violating Elastic Electron Scattering and Coulomb Distortions

Parity violating elastic electron-nucleus scattering provides an accurate and model independent measurement of neutron densities, because the Z couples primarily to neutrons. Coulomb distortion corrections to the parity violating asymmetry Al are calculated exactly using a relativistic optical model. Distortions significantly reduce Al in a heavy nucleus. However even with distortions, an exper...

A New Measurement of the Weak Mixing Angle

The E158 experiment at SLAC has made the first measurement of parity violation in electron-electron (Møller) scattering. We report a preliminary result using 50% of the accumulated data sample for the right-left parity-violating cross-section asymmetry (APV ) in the elastic scattering of 45 and 48 GeV polarized electron beams with unpolarized electrons in a liquid hydrogen target. We find APV =...

Parity violation in elastic electron-proton scattering and the Proton's strange magnetic form factor

We report a new measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering from the proton at backward scattering angles. This asymmetry is sensitive to the strange magnetic form factor of the proton as well as electroweak axial radiative corrections. The new measurement of A = -4.92+/-0.61+/-0.73 ppm provides a significant constraint on these quantities. The implications for ...
